Coasters can prevent date rape
Issue date: 11/11/05 Section: Features

Listen up all you dating and club goers, there is now a way to protect yourself from the date rape drugs GHB and Ketamine. There's a new product on the market called "drink safe" coasters, which alert you that drugs are present in your drink.

How do they work? To test the drink, place a drop of the liquid on the coaster. The chemicals on the coaster react to certain drugs causing the coaster to turn blue. If your coaster turns blue, ditch the drink, and leave wherever you are immediately.

Some people are not aware of the serious effects of these date rape drugs. GHB, which is gamma hydroxybutrate, usually is an odorless liquid slightly salty to the taste. A low dose of GHB, or about a half a teaspoon, has an effect similar to that of alcohol, and can often make a person feel more relaxed or sociable.

A higher dose of GHB, about one tablespoon, can make you feel dizzy and sleepy, and will sometimes cause vomiting, muscle spasms and loss of consciousness. In cases of overdose, about two tablespoons, you lose consciousness, and breathing slows down sometimes to the point of death.
